It’s no secret Minnesotans love where they live. After living here, myself, for two years, it’s easy to see why. But before you assume I’m writing in regards to our famous Juicy Lucy or that one mall, the Mall of America, it is, in fact, something totally separate. I consider this the Twin Cities secret gem. What is it, you ask? Well, our incredible music scene. Minnesota’s music scene is a subject that’s often overlooked during conversations of why locals love the Cities. Of course, we have the Target and Xcel Energy Centers that hold major musicians and bands but, I say, the biggest attribute to our music scene is actually the numerous mid-sized and local venues. Smaller venues equal more up-and-coming artists frequent Minneapolis than any other major city. On a personal note, my favorite genre of music is indie pop/alternative. After moving here two years ago, I’ve definitely come to realize I’m spoiled by having access to so many concerts to go along with my somewhat obscure musical taste. I’ve had countless concert experiences that are just darn amazing, but, let it be known my desire for live music is never satiated. Below I have for you a fraction of my favorite bands that are playing in Minneapolis in the upcoming months. Even if you don’t want to shell out money for a ticket, definitely look up a couple of their songs.

BØRNS

The past year has seen this band blow up. I saw them in March 2015 when opening for Misterwives at Triple Rock Social Club (a super tiny venue in Minneapolis that is my favorite). I’d been listening to their music since the end of 2014 so I was stoked to see them live. I, also, happened to be one of the few in the crowd who was familiar with the band. Now, they’re playing their fourth show in the Cities next week and it’s been sold out for months. It’s hard not to get hooked on BØRNS. The electronic melodies paired with the lead singers high vocal range are a perfect combination.

Favorite Songs: 10,000 Emerald Pools, Past Lives, Electric Love

Highasakite

If you saw Monsters and Men when they came to town last fall, then you may have heard of Highasakite. I’m super excited to see that the Norwegian band is coming back to the Cities to play at the 7th Entry in September. The venue is small, with a capacity of only 250 people, which a huge plus.  There isn’t a band I’ve listened to that has vocals similar to Highasakite. They have a unique and folksy vibe that I can’t get enough of.

Favorite Songs: Golden Ticket, Since Last Wednesday

Grouplove

Back in high school, there were four bands I would die to see live. Grouplove was one of them. However, being that I grew up in South Dakota, the state rarely provided very many concert opportunities outside the genre of country. Luckily, I’ve been successful in seeing three of the four bands over the past years, but I have yet to cross Grouplove off my list. When I saw their upcoming concert announcement, my inner 17-year old did a happy dance. I’m already excited for their show and have been listening to some of my favorites from their first albums. Their music is fun and upbeat, perfect for jamming out on a summer day.

Favorite Songs: Shark Attack, Ways To Go, Naked Kids
